心房顫動是由於心臟裡的兩個小房間(左心房及右心房)沒有正常的跳動所導致, 屬於一種會造成心跳不規則的”心律不整”,是因為心臟內產生規則心跳的功能出現問題. 在正常心跳時,心房正常且規則的收縮,每分鐘約為60~100下; 然而心房顫動發生時,心房非但沒有正常的收縮,反而跳得不規則且非常快速, 其跳動的速度可以達到每分鐘350~600次.有時我們會稱之為"心房纖維顫動"或者簡稱"房顫"
